Betsy DeVos, An American Inspiration

Betsy DeVos began her long career in politics after serving as an in-school mentor for inner city at-risk children for fifteen years. Her earliest inspiration came from her mother, who was a schoolteacher. Today, Betsy DeVos is the 11th Secretary of Education in the United States. She advocates for children who may not have access to proper education and quality schooling. Because of her work, many children have access to resources they may not otherwise have.

Betsy DeVos is the founder of The Betsy DeVos Family Foundation. Her philanthropic foundation is a major influence on students around the country. She provides funding for better education and better schools. Throughout her time as a philanthropist, and since she has founded her foundation, she has been lucky enough to donate millions of dollars to schools and organizations around the country.

In 2015, her foundation made donations in excess of $150,000 to Success Academy Charter Schools. Her donation was well received by the New York City school. In that same year, she donated another $5,000 to GREAAT Schools Inc. – a management company for non-profit charter schools. Following these gracious donations, her foundation allotted $200,000 to The Potter’s House, which is a Christian school in Michigan. Betsy DeVos is a Christian woman and loves God. This donation served her heart well and the school was ecstatic; many students thanked her.

Along with her husband, Betsy DeVos donated $100,000 to Alliance for School Choice – a non-profit organization dedicated to giving children the right to choose their schools. The choice of which school to attend is unfortunately not given to many children. Issues with zoning and bus schedules are often cited reasons for the educational shortcoming. Because of Betsy’s donation to this company, many children now have the opportunity to select which school they attend. They have the chance to receive the best education possible.

Betsy DeVos has sat on the board of The Foundation for Excellence in Education – a Florida non-profit headed by Jeb Bush. The organization dedicates resources to fulfilling the need for better pay for teachers, newer books for students, and upgraded facilities. The donations she made to this non-profit during her time on the board were monumental. She was able to achieve the improvement of multiple schools across Florida, a state with historically low rates of literacy. Betsy DeVos saw a problem and she set out to solve it. Thanks to her hard work and dedication, literacy rates, test scores, and college acceptances improved.

Betsy DeVos has been heralded in the news as one of the most beneficial women in politics. She is absolutely instrumental in implementing care plans, educational reforms, and better budgets for education. Betsy DeVos is an inspiration to all Americans.
